![]() DCTribal is proud to host the exclusive partnership of Devyani Dance Company and FatChanceBellyDance the weekend of November 11 & 12, 2006. Tribal:Pura is an alchemy of art and science and a unique exploration of Traditional Tribal Style Bellydance in its original form; using the guidelines of classical art and the science of anatomy to communicate an absolute style. Tribal:Pura participants will enjoy:
What is American Tribal Style (ATS)? Belly dance is both a celebration of the female spirit and a physical display of the strength and beauty of women. Its roots can be traced back to the rituals of past matriarchal cultures and to the secular entertainments that evolved as the gypsies traveled through India, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Spain.
American Tribal Style Belly dance is largely an improvisational dance, using simple steps and gestures in a repetitive fashion, building on the music and the interaction between the dancers. American Tribal Style is elegant and graceful, celebrating the strength and beauty of the female form, regardless of age and size. Since the creation of FatChanceBellyDance (FCBD) by Carolena Nericcio in 1987, the troupe has fascinated audiences worldwide with their exciting improvisational technique. Carolena has refined a montage of different "tribal" elements into what has been coined American Tribal Style belly dance. The range of Carolena's comprehensive instructional videos, her interactive video consultation with remote students and teachers, as well as FCBD's commitment to out of town workshops have spread FCBD's American Tribal Style technique and philosophy around the globe.
Workshop Details
Saturday Schedule The Saturday workshops begin with a breakdown of basic and intermediate movements from the FCBD tribal vocabulary and cover correct technique for executing them. Then, students will break out their zils and learn the five basic Tribal Zil patterns (Basic RLR, Alternating RL, Military, Moroccan Six, Baladi) and apply them while dancing! Attendees will also learn movements developed by Megha to fit with the FCBD format and how to make it work. Carolena & Megha will guide students through variations and combinations based on the moves covered in the workshop, and students will walk away with mini-choreographies that can be plugged into dances as well as effective setups for some of the faster moving steps and turns.
Sunday Schedule As a continuation of Saturday, participants will focus the steps and their variations in combinations, choreographies and improvisation. Focusing on communication as one of the subtle but very exciting aspects of Tribal Style dance, students will use a series of simple but challenging drills that will assist with learning the concept of Leading and Following, Formations, Cues and Transitions and Music Interpretaion. The workshop will guide dancers through partnering and group work with emphasis on communication between dancers, core Tribal philosophy, understanding the steps and body mechanics, how to make effective combinations, dancing improv with partners, and how to use the music. As a wonderful and insightful way to round out your dance weekend, Carolena & Megha will spend some time discussing the history of American Tribal Style Belly Dance.
